Why Getting a Second Opinion Matters

January 22, 2025

It is often suggested that if you have been diagnosed with cancer, seeking a second opinion will allow you to learn more about your cancer type and make truly informed decisions about your treatment options.

Getting a second opinion is an important part of becoming educated about a cancer diagnosis and treatment options and will also give you the opportunity to find a physician you are comfortable with, someone you respect, and who you believe is paying attention to your needs.

When getting a second opinion on a cancer diagnosis, some important questions to ask include:

  • Can you review my pathology report and explain it to me?
  • What are the potential benefits and drawbacks of each treatment option?
  • What are my chances of success with each treatment option?
  • What are the long-term side effects of the treatment?
  • What is your experience treating this type of cancer?
  • How does your treatment plan align with the national guidelines?
  • Can you provide information on support groups or other resources available to me?

Tips for preparing for your second opinion appointment include writing your questions down ahead of time and bringing someone with you to help listen and understand the information discussed.
